Security Police See Lord Mayor After Freedom Appeal

BRISBANE, Fri. (1 p.m.)Less than 24 hours after he had appealed for a public movement “to protect human rights, human liberties and human freedom,” the Lord Mayor of Brisbane (Mr J : B. Chandler) was interrogated by a Federal security police officer. . Mr Chandler made his appeal to the Rotary Club at Ipswich when he said: “Never before—not even in the dark days of war—has the Australian way of life been in such danger.

“If this way of life is to be preserved, decisive and effective action must be taken now. “We must go into the highways and byways and preach the gospel of free people and free enterprise with all the strength we can muster. “Much as I dislike the thought of any fresh movement, I am tempted to think that we need an organisation with a single, positive ebjective—to fight for freedom. “Call it a freedom league if you will ” Mr Chandler and asked for full details of the league and those associated with An investigating officer later visited it. Mr Chandler says he told the officer: “Give my compliments to Dr Evatt and tell him it was like his impertinence to send an officer to investigate me.” The head of the Federal Security Service in Brisbane (Mr D. A. Alexander) commented: •‘My service will continue to display an interest in the activities of the extreme Right as well as extreme Left organisations.”
