Many New Settlers For Australia
MELBOURNE. Thu. (2 p.m.).—The Minister of Immigration (Mr Calwell) said that, this year Australia would receive 70,000 British migrants and that new citizens from Europe would make the year’s total at leiist 150,000. Shipping space was assured to bring 239,000 people from Britain in the two years to the end of 1951. The expanded programme of British migration now in sight, combined with the natural increase of 100.000 people a year, would increase the population almost 500,000 annually. Australia, with 7,500.000 people was a small European outpost on the fringe of a region of rising nationalism populated by 1.200,000.000 people with a rate of increase of 43,000 a day.
