Why Weather Office Persists

Since official approval has been given the name Northland, many people have been wondering at the persistency of the weather office in using the term ‘North Auckland' in its weather broadcasts. It appears that, before a change will be made, the change has to traverse the tortuous channels of officialdom, culminating in publication in the Gazette. A long time ago the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce requested that weather broadcasts should refer to Northland instead of North Auckland, but the reply at that time was that the weather office was bound by the Geographic Board’s nomenclature. Now the Geographic Board and the Minister of Lands have approved the name Northland it was expected that the weather office would give immediate effect to the change, but it appears that official notice in the Gazette is still required.

If the weather office does not soon use the name Northland, or at least immediately after official gazetting, it is likely that the Chamber of Commerce, which has been indefatigable in its efforts to have Northland given common usage, will make prompt representations to the responsible department.
