Australian Dollar Cuts

CANBERRA, Thu. (1.30 p.m.).—The Federal Cabinet dollar sub-committee has approved an overall cut of 25 per cent in dollar imports. The decision was made after the subcommittee had heard a report from the Minister of Post-war Reconstruction (Mr J. J. Dedman), who represented Australia-at the London conference on dollars. No official announcement was made after the meeting and members of the sub-committec refused to reveal details of the proposed cuts, which are subject to approval of a full Cabinet meeting on August 19. It is known that the principal cuts will be in petrol, heavy machinery, motor vehicles, newsprint, tobacco, films and certain textiles.
