One-Legged Kiwi For Auckland Zoo

AUCKLAND, Thu. (Sp.).—An offer of a one-legged Kiwi' has been received by the Auckland l Zoo. The bird was caught in an opossum trap in the bush near Opotiki and later operated on to remove the damaged leg. As a kiwi with one leg could not be expected to return to the bush and scratch for its food, the bird was kept by the chemist who performed the operation on the leg. Mr J. D. Clark, and fed by local schoolchildren, who supply a regular diet of choice worms. If a permit can be obtained from the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Parry), the kiwi will be kept in an area which was planted in native bush 20 years ago. It is considered that kiwis are more plentiful in the Opotiki district than is commonly believed, as numerous reports of their presence have been received in recent years.
