After 40 years in the Government service, Captain Leonard Robertson, superintendent of mercantile marine at Wellington, will retire at the end of this month. Going to sea at an ’early age, Captain Robertson served in 16 • sailing vessels and 22 steamships. He was shipwrecked twice—in 1905 in the barquentine La Bella, which was wrecked at Warrnambool, Australia, and again the following year in the brigantine Defiance, wrecked at North Spit, Kaipara. Mr William Lancelot Miles has died at the age of 85. Mr Miles farmed land overlooking the Wanganui River and specialised in breeding Red Poll cattle which took honours at a number of agricultural shows. Born in Christ- , church, he left New Zealand in his youth, spending 30 years in South Africa and England. Before returning to the Dominion he served with the Natal Scouts in the South African War. He is survived by. two sons, Bishop Grosvenor Miles, of Madagascar, and Mr C. Miles, of Taumarunui. His wife died three years ago.
