Western Union Defence
An important conference of the Defence Ministers of the five Brussels Pact nations is being held in Luxembourg. The delegates have agreed upon a policy for supplementing armaments and increasing the effectiveness of their nations’ military forces, but this task has been hampered by uncertainty as to the amount of assistance they can get from the United States within the framework of the Atlantic Pact. The conference and its decisions give point to a declaration by FieldMarshal Montgomery, when address-
ing the Royal Netherlands Military Society, that the united strength of the Western Union nations could defeat any would-be aggressor, for “our manpower, technical ability, wealth of raw materials, and potential organising ability are jointly far greater than those of any other power or group of powers.” This, however, he pointed out, was dependent upon each nation in the union being ready to give up a little of its sovereignty to make the cooperation necessary to withstand
attack. That puts the position of the Western nations in a nutshell.
