Punished Twice For Same Crime?

LONDON, Fri. (10 a.m.) —A man whose wife died after he had been sentenced at the Central Criminal Court to seven years’ imprisonment for wounding with intent to murder, -was, in the same court today, sentenced to death for murder. The defending counsel argued unsuccessfully that, or the cardinal principle of British law, a man could not be tided and punished twice for the same offence. The man’s wife died 42 days after she was stabbed, in March. Had she lived for a year and a day, a murder charge could not have been brought against the man. The judge said the jury’s recommendation of mercy would be passed on.
