Bombs In Calcutta
CALCUTTA, Thu. (11 a.m.)— Five bombs were thrown in various parts of Calcutta today before a meeting addressed by the Prime Minister of India (Pandit Nehru) was held. Two of the explosions were in South Calcutta, two in Central Calcutta, and the fifth' at Sealdah, a suburban rail.way station. A number of civilians were injured. One bomb was thrown near Mr Nehru’s meeting. One policeman was killed and (Bhother injured in this explosion. A man was arrested. One railway police officer was injured at Sealdah. While Mr Nehru,was returning to Government House from the meeting, ® youijg man carrying a loaded revolver was challenged by the police. He fired three times at one policeman before being arrested. NEHRU’S APPEAL In his address to the crowd, which was estimated at nearly 1,000,000, Mr Nehru appealed to the people of India to : remain calm and to face the Communist threat squarely. His appeal was greeted with an outburst of cjiearing. Mr Nehru continued his speech after .asking the police not to interfere with demonstrators, About 1000 people attended a LeftWing counter-demonstration, organised in defiance of the official ban. Speakers condemned the Congress Government’s "repressive policy.” Police in Calcutta today raided a number of houses, arrested 13 people, and seized a large quantity of leaflets. NEHRU LOSES TEMPER. Two unexploded bombs were found nearby after Mr Nehru had left the meeting. The Associated Press says more than 40 people were injured by a bomb which exploded before the start of the meeting. During the meeting Mr Nehru lost his temper at. interruptions and catcallings. "Is my country to be run by hooligans? I am here —your Prime Minister,” he cried.
