AUCKLAND, Fn. (P.A.)—For stealing as a servant £6300 belonging to the Social Security Department, Anthony Callaghan, -11, clerk, was sentenced to three years’ reformative detention by Mr Justice Callan in the Supreme Court today. Defending counsel. Mr Sinclair, said last year Callaghan found he was short in his accounts and embarked on betting to make up the loss. He took public money. His betting was not successful. Everybody spoke well of Callaghan. Addressing the prisoner, the Judge said: “The fact that you turned to such a source indicated you were quite unworthy of the trust your superiors and friends placed in you. “Only persons of great dishonesty of mind would do it. “It appears from the probation officer’s report that you always had a tendency to gamble."
