OBITUARY.

Mr E. V. Fry

A past resident of Whangarei, and the Auckland deputy-chief postmaster, Mr Edwin Victor Fry has died in Auckland, at the age of 52. He had been in the Auckland Hospital for three months. Joining the Post and Telegraph Department in Christchurch 37-years ago, Mr Fry served in the engineering branch. He was on the staff of the Whangarei branch until he left for overseas’ service during the Second World War.

On his return five years ago he was appointed to a position in Auckland.

Later, he became senior supervisor in the regional engineer’s office and was appointed deput.y-chief postmaster last year. On his return from overseas’ service with the Army in the First World War, Mr Fry took a keen interest in the Territorial movement.

In the early 1920’s he was in the Northern Depot, New Zealand Corps of Signals, and when he came to Whangarei 21 years ago he was in the North Auckland Mounted Rifles.

While in Whangarei he took a keen interest in youth work, and was for a time signals instructor of the Presbyterian Church branch of the Boys’ Brigade. SIGNALS OFFICER Mr Fry was in command of signals units in Britain when he served with the Second Echelon. He kept in charge of these units until they rejoined the Division in the Middle East early in 1941.

With the rank of major, he was appointed adjutant of the New Zealand Corps Signal School at Maadi and served with it until his return to New Zealand.

He was a member of the Onehunga Orphans' Club. Mr Fry is survived by his wife and three daughters.
