Rival Claims For Fertiliser Plants

WELLINGTON, Thu.. iSp.).— Rival claims for the erection of fertiliser works at Kawhia and Mt Maunganui, were advanced by Mr W. J. Broadfoot (O—Waitomo) and Mr F. W. Doidge (O—Tauranga) respectively. in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. In reply to Mr Broadfoot, the Ministeer of Agriculture (Mr Cullen) said the extension of fertiliser plants was a matter for decision by the primary producer organisations and existing companies.

Any application for permission to erect works at strategic points would receive sympathetic hearing from the Government.

Mr Broadfoot: Will the people who are willing to take up manufacturing at Kawhia get a licence to import machinery?

Mr Skinner, Minister of Lands: That assurance can be given.

Mr Doidge said the Minister of Agriculture should bear in mind the representations from primary producers in the Tauranga electorate for a fertiliser plant to be erected at Mt Maunganui. There would be access to a splendid harbour, which was much better than anything the member for Waitomo could claim.
