Whangarei's 3 Losses, Draw On Opening Day

COUNTRY.WEEK HOCKEY ■ ■ ■

THE Whangarei men’s A team was beaten 3—2 by Franklin A in the big match of the opening day of the annual Country Week hockey tournament at Auckland yesterday. Franklin A won the White Horse Cup last year and Whangarei were runners-up.

Yesterday, Whangarei was most un'ucky not to win. Its star player, Roy Roughton, a former New Zealand and Auckland rep. had to leave the field after about five minutes play. He was troubled by a sore muscle which he pulled in the King’s Birthday tournament in Whangarei. His replacement meant a re-shuffle of the forwards. Even under this handicap, Whangarei was consistently on attack in the closing stages. Roy Price and Cyril Bint each hit the ball over the top of the net and Mullins almost scored twice. Franklin led'2-nil at half-time. Ten minutes after the breather. Bint goaled from a penalty corner after three attempts. . VALIANT EFFORT Franklin then scored again to make it 3-1 but, in the dying stages Mullins scored a hard-earned goal after V. Penney and R. Price had sent the forwards away following a long bout of midfield play. Franklin used its wingers better than Whangarei, and the two flank men employed their outstanding speed and ability to good effect. Both of them were Auckland country reps last year. Roughton hopes to be able to play in the team’s third match, which is being played on Wednesday afternoon. The A team had a free day today but plays twice tomorrow, against Piako in the morning and Bay of Plenty Maoris in the afternoon. The Whangarei men’s B team drew with Franklin B 3-all in the competitiorvfor the Captain White Cup.
