Battening' Of Roofs

AUCKLAND, Tue. (P.A.)—The Arbitration Court today reserved decision on the application by the Labour Department for an interpretation, whether the battening of roofs was the work of roof tilers or carpenters. The matter came to a head as a side issue in the recent carpenter’s dispute. Mr A. G. Hendry, president of the Tilers’ Union, said that in the recent dispute the Carpenters’ Union—a body since de-registcred—claimed that battening was their work and the tilers decided not to fix battens on jobs in dispute. On March 17 all tilers in the Auckland Province were dismissed. Later, the Department of Labour offered to seek an interpretation and the union readied an agreement with the employers for battening to be written into a new award.
