Hospital Costs Rise £12,371 In One Year
AN increase of £12,371 in the expenditure at the Whangarei Hospital during • one year was shown from figures tabled by the secretary (Mr L. Wilton) at a meeting of the Whangarei Hospital Board:yesterday. „ . . Total expenditure had risen from £53,576 to £60,947 during the year. . .
The cost per occupied bed had risen from £494 in 1947-48 to £609 in 1948-49, while the daily cost rose from 27/- to 33/5 during the same period The following table, with the 194849 figures in parenthesis, showed the increase in each item of expenditure: Provisions, £8694 (£10,116); surgery and dispensary, £3512 (£5166), domestic, £7639 (£8830); salaries and wages, £29,682 (£38,254); miscellaneous, £242 (£229); establishment, £3806 (£3352). mm: ENGINEER’S SALARY An instance of a large increase in wages was given by the secretary. He said that last year three of the board’s stokers had received more than the engineer who was in charge of them The board decided to ask authority to raise the engineer's salary. fthlALa'P I NURSES’ HOME ■ “Good progress has been made this month,” stated the clerk of works (Mr W. Durham), when reporting on the new nurses’ home Plasterers were working outside and had finished the first coat on the west wall of .the west wing, while a start had been made with the door. "Drainage Work is well in hand , and over 100 ft of sewer has been laid and tested.” the clerk reported. POTTER HOME Gifts of flowers and cake were presented to inmates of the Potter Memorial Home by members of the Whareora Women’s Institute, who visited the home on Mother’s Day, reported the sister in charge (Miss M. Vazey). The Maromaku Women's institute' sent books and handkerchiefs, while members of the Mangapai Women's Institute visited the home on May 27..
