TRUCK RACKED INTO WINDOW One of the tallest plateglass windows In Whangarei was broken when a truck backed into the side of the Salon de Luxe, in Bank Street, Whangarei, yesterday ' afternoon. The truck was loaded with perishable goods which we're to have been delivered to a firm next door to the .salon. Heavy rain was falling at the time.

PETROL FIRE A leaking petrol tank.and an electric welder combined to cause a fire at the Whangarei Engineering Company’s works yesterday afternoon. The tank was resting on the floor when a spark from the welder apparently set fire to the escaping petrol. The Whangarei Fire Brigade was called but the blaze had been put out with fire extinguishers when it arrived. No damage was caused. GOOD WISHES Gratification that the chairman of the Whangarei Hospital Board (Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay) was looking so well after his brief illness was expressed by Mr W. Jones at the board meeting yesterday. Other members joined with'Mr Jones in expressing their good wishes to the/ chairman, who thanked the board for its evidences of goodwill. HOSPITAL STATISTICS Patients at the Whangarei Hospital at May 1 numbered 107, including 21 maternity patients. With figures in parenthesis representing the number of maternity patients, 343 (67) patients were admitted during May and 323 (63) discharged. Nine patients died during May, leaving 118 (25) remaining at May 31. The daily occupied bed rate for May was 124.2 (23.7), and for. the two months 120.3 (232). KAIKOHE REVALUATION Cost to the Kaikohe Borough Council of the recent revaluation of the borough will be £57/12/-. The Valuation Department’s account for this amount was passed for payment last evening. The Bay of Islands County Council recently received a bill of £915 for its share oi the county revaluation.

TWO STRINGS TO BOW Piping for water supply to houses is a serious problem in Kaikohe. Last night the June meeting of the Borough Council resolved to place a standing order with an Auckland firm for 50 lengths of §in. piping. Not top much confidence was placed in this procedure, however, •as the council decided to write to the Minister of Supply direct asking him to expedite despatch of urgently-needed piping to be used in taking water to new state houses. RUGBY EXPENSES Assembly points for Northland representative players were fixed by the NARU management committee last night. The fixing of these points followed the heavy travelling costs charged to the union by players in the last two seasons. In future the parent body will be responsible for travelling expenses only from the following centres:—North Hokianga, Broadwood (north), Kohukohu (south); Mangonui, Kaitaia; South Hokianga, Rawene; Whangaroa, Kaeo; Bay of Islands, Kaikohe and Kawakawa; Whangarei, Whangarei; Northern Wairoa, Ddrgaville; Otamate, Maungaturoto; Rodney, Warkworth.
