Maoris On Charge Of Manslaughter
AUCKLAND, Tue. (Sp.)— Remands until June 23 were granted by Mr J. H. Luxford, SJVL, yesterday, when two Maoris, Tumarae Hokai, 48, moulder, and Pene Tauwai Hokai, 22, labourer, appeared before him on a joint charge of manslaughter. Replying to an application for bail, Senior-Detective H. Hay said the charge arose from a fracas in Nelson Street on the night of June 3. It was alleged that deceased, Andrew Hokai, hit one of the accused and then Pene Hokai struck deceased, while Tumarae Hokai kicked at deceased. Andrew Hokai died from injuries received in the fracas. Bail for each accused was allowed by the magistrate. He fixed it at £IOO, with one surety of £IOO, and made a condition that each should report daily to the police.
