Marston Scores Double ; Boese Wins Huntaway

AFTER winning the long head at the Maungakaramea sheep dog trials on Monday with Beth, Mr L. Mars ton,_ of Waiuku, completed a notable double yesterday by gaining first place in. the short head with Clyde

This dog won the long head the previous year. He scored 52 points in a possible 60 yesterday morning and had an advantage of 3£ points over the second place-getter Dan, owned by Mr J. T. Studhohne, of Mititai. An outstanding win was scored in the huntaway by Bounce, owned by Mr A. Boese, of Maromaku, which dropped only four of the possible 45 points.

Half points separated the four placed dogs in this event. Their work brought high praise from the Judge (Mr J. E. White, Ohaewai) and from spectators. Mr White was convinced that he had never seen anything better in his long association with trials. The winner had three very difficult and stubborn sheep and had to work hard all the way. His sterling effort made his success popular. The other three placed dogs had more' freely-moving sheep and carried out their tasks in an impressive manner. HEADING DOGS TESTED The heading dogs, generally, had a difficult day. The sheep did not appear accustomed to being handled and often became headstrong for no apparent reason. It was not uncommon for one of the three to break away from the others and cause the dog considerable trouble.

A fair drive was put in to pen but sheep were allowed to pass. Recovered and penned in 10.20. BEN’S GOOD HEAD. Ben was cast to right, made a good run out and headed quietly in 1.40. Startled sheep a little at start of pull. Steadied and . made excellent pull through flags. Failed to get grip on sheep in drive and allowed them to get off course. Recovered for good position at hurdles.

The. sheep were a little off-course in the second drive but a good position was obtained at pen. Let sheep past and around pen arid yarded after several attempts in 11-0. Man started to shut gate before sheep were completely in. Nell was cast to right and made a very good run out to head in 1.6. The pull was started a little fast and the sheep were allowed to drift across hill to right. The drift was continued all way down hill and through fenceline. Recovery made at flags. Sheep not under good control on drive but continued on good line with dog in front of sheep. Allowed sheep past hurdles but recovered. Sheep out of control at start of second drive, recovered at pen, lost position and let sheep round back. Recovered and made good yarding in 11.41. Position points in the short head were: Head 13. pull 13, first drive. 5, hurdles 5, second drive 5, work at yard 13, yard 6; total 60.

This usually happened when the dog was perforfning his work in excellent style. ’ The resultant loss of time on the pull proved costly, as, in many cases, the allotted 12 minutes elapsed before the sheep could be penned. There were 45 entries in this event, and Clyde was the only one to score 50 points or better. Two competitors failed to get a run on account of darkness.

The loss of an hour in the morning through fog made it difficult for the big field to be disposed of before the light failed. The course, on .Mr A. Crawford’s property was in splendid order. The absencp of long grass on the hill assisted the dogs considerably. After being cast to the right, Clyde went a little wide, stopped and failed to take the cast. He continued' wide out and headed quietly in 1.5. He started the’pull quietly and continued on a very good line down the hill and through the flags, where he steadied well. The man placed the sheep out of the square at the start of the drive, which was started on a good line with excellent control through the hurdles. The sheep were a little off course on the second drive with man and dog changing positions. Recovered and had fair drive to pen where position was lost. Recovered and yarded in 11.9.

The place-getters were: L. Marston (Waiuku) Clyde 101-111-4-

5-4-11-6-52 J T. Studholme (Mititai) Dan 10-10-

Dan was cast to the right but stopped at the fenceline. He continued, over-ran the head and finally headed in 1.35. Started quietly, split .sheep, recovered and made a very good pull. The dog had trouble in shifting the sheep at the fenceline where they split. After recovering, a good line was kept to the flags and through. The drive was. started on an excellent line although the sheep were a little out of control. Recovered -.and continued drive to pegs with good position at hurdles. The second drive was on a good line but not with the best control. Sheep were allowed past pen, dog turned tail, recovered and penned in 10.22.

Skip was cast to right but came in approaching top of hill. He stopped and was recast and . then stopped and set sheep-before heading in 1.40. The sheep were startled at beginning of pull, and were allowed, to drift to left. Dog split sheep slightly. The pull was very jerky and off course to-left till, halfway down hill. Work improved just above fenceline. The drive was started too fast, with the man running. A good, line was maintained to hurdle.
