Will Australia Have To Import Food?
CANBERRA, Mon. (11.30 a.m.)—Expanding population would force Australia to import food unless primary production was increased, said the Minister of Commerce (Mr Pollard), who estimated that the population of Australia would reach 10,000,000 within 20 years. Without adequate rural expansion, he added, imports of meat, potatoes, and fruit might be necessary. The key to future food requirements was the breaking up of large pastoral holdings, coupled with improved farming methods. The inability of some states to obtain sufficient suitable lands for soldier settlement, for which the Commonwealth had made funds available, mdde it imperative to resume good country held by big landholders and pastoral companies.
