The Governor General of New Zealand, Sir Bernard Freyberg, V.C.. flew to Western Australia yesterday to continue his Australian tour. His Excellency’s’ son, Captain Paul Freyberg, left yesterday to join the Orion at Fremantle on his return to the Middle East.
Mr E. R. Matthews, the only nomination, has been elected Awanui riding member of the Mangonui County Council, replacing Mr W. J. Bell, whose resignation was received with regret at the November meeting, consequent on his removal from the district.
The newly-appointed High Commissioner of Western Samoa, Mr G. R. Powles, landed at Auckland from the liner Aorangi from Vancouver yesterday with his wife and two sons. He has been counsellor in the New Zealand Legation in Washington. On the voyage from Vancouver he injured a leg tendon while playing deck tennis and he left the ship yestei’day on crutches.
