Heavy Works Programme For Northland Highways
WELLINGTON, Thu. (Sp.)—A heavy programme of reconstruction and sealing on all highways radiating from the main centres, and particularly on the main route north of Whangarei was mentioned yesterday by the acting Prime Minister (Mr Nash) when announcing the Government’s plans for the improvement of highways and bridges in the various main highways districts. Deviation work to link up with the recently finished Tangiterora bridge was being completed, while the Kaihu River bridge and many smaller structures were under construction, Mr Nash said.
A start is to be made soon with the construction of the new access road to the Whenuapai aerodrome from Auckland.
Mr Nash said that the southern outlet from Auckland to relieve traffic congestion, particularly in the rapidly expanding adjacent centres, was being constructed to motorway standards as fast as' circumstances permitted.
The new road to Whenuapai would link up with the Riverhead Road to Albany, which was now under complete reconstruction.
