War Not Inevitable, Bevin Believes .

LONDON, Thu. (1 p.m.)—“l am not one of those who believe war is in-' evitable,” said Mr Ernest Bevin, speaking to the Woolwich Chamber of Commerce.

“I believe that with wise guidance, keeping cool, exercising patience and sometimes grim determination to survive, a condition in the world can be created in which peace is not only probable but possible and certain.”

Mr Bevin said that 18 months ago things looked very much worse than now.

The United States outlook then was very different.

“There has been a great change now.” he said.

‘That part of the world whose spiritual life and outlook is very much like our own is organising consciously. “There is a growing solidarity in the desire for the Western Union to be united in defence.

“If that unity is produced those who would wish to achieve power would have to think twice or thrice. “With power, resolution and unity, and all those great beliefs I have indicated, together with the Western Hemisphere, there is a strength which will make an attack impossible. “I believe that day is rapidly coming.”
