Appointment Of Bankrupt

WELLINGTON. Fri. (P.A.) At question time in the House of Representatives today, Mr G. H. Macklcy (O—Wairarapa) gave notice to ask the acting Prime Minister (Mr Nash) on whose recommendation the appointment of Mr W. G. Simpson as a member of the Fresh Meat Supplies Commission was, made, and on what grounds the Government justified the appointment of an undischarged bankrupt as a member of that commission. Mr Mackley said Mr Simpson was described in the Governor-General s warrant naming members of the commission as a liaison officer in the Department of Labour and Employment. The Minister of Labour (Mr McLagan>: The honourable member is politically bankrupt. The Minister of Rehabilitation (Mr Skinner) answering Mr J. R. Marshall (O—Ml Victoria) said no decision had yet been made as to whether the Rehabilitation trade training scheme would be converted into a scheme for training adult civilians. If trade training centres were later applied to civilian training when no longer required for rehabilitation, it would be the function of the Labour Department, not the Rehabilitation Department, to conduct any such scheme. PENSIONER’S BET Dr A. M. Finlay CG—North Shore) gave notice to ask the Minister of Social Security (Mr Parry) if he had seen a newspaper report that a person described as a pensioner had placed, among others, two bets of £SO each at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting last Saturday.

“If the person concerned is a Social Security beneficiary will the Minister investigate his right to continue as such?” asked Dr Finlay. Mr A: S. Sutherland (O —Hauraki): Why not let him have a flutter if he wants it. Don’t be a killjoy.
