to Monopoly To Labour Barristers

CANBERRA, Fri. (11.30 a.m.).—An unsuccessful attempt to persuade caucus to decide that the Government should brief only Labour barristers for cases in which the Federal Government is involved was made by the Minister of Traftsport and External Teritories (Mr E. J. Ward). He claimed that many barristers asked Labour members of Parliament, who were witnesses, leading political questions to embarrass them.

He said that barrister’s in recent cases had tried to discredit Government members, although they did not even have a prima facie case on which to base their questions. •Mr Ward is reported to have urged that the Attorney-General's department should be combed out to find people who appointed anti-Labour legal men to cases involving Federal prosecutions. It was afterwards officially stated that the acting Attorney-General (Senator N. E. McKenna) ‘would continue to give briefs to the best legal men available, irrespective of their political affiliations.”
