Britain In Era Of Push-By Won War

NEW YORK, Thu.—Rear Admiral S. Parsons, Naval Director of Atomic Defence, in a speech at San Diego said that for Britain “the era of the push-button war has already dawned.” He added: “This era for England will include the possibility of a hit-or-miss version of atomic push-button war \yhen the first, atom bomb is produced on the Continent.” For the United States, however, the push-button war, in the sense of sup ersonic guided missiles with an adequate navigation system, had not yet dawned and was not in immeprospect. Admiral Parsons said that atomic energy had “definitely not made a short, cheap mechanical victory possible either for the United States or any foreign power.”

He said he was convinced that with its own bomb the United States had acquired a serious hazard because of the danger that the nation “may fall into the trap of thinking that the atom bomb is the key to easy victory.”
