Mystery Fires On Queensland Farms
BRISBANE, Tuc. (1 p.m.) Eight mysterious iires in the past eight wee’ks in the Goondiwindi district of southeastern Queensland, have given rise to the beiiei' that the area is menaced by a firebug. The Criminal Investigation Branch has been called in to investigate the series of fires .at woolsheds and haystacks which threatens to disrupt the wool industry in south-eastern Queensland.
Yesterday, a fire starting mysteriously in the early morning, totally destroyed Tahvood railway station—an important wool and sheep railhead. Local graziers, who believe that the fires are part of a grand plan to disrupt their industry, claim that several threatening notes have been received, and that in two sheds which were burned down the water supply had been tampered with. They allege that wool in a third shed had been soaked with kerosene.
The first seven fires caused damage estimated at £15,000.
