Policy Laid Down For Assistance
HAMILTON, Mon. (P.A.).—The cardinal principle of the policy laid down by the Minister of Finance (Mr Nash) and the Minister of Rehabilitation (Mr Skinner) concerning assistance that is to be granted sufferers from the tornado in Frankton and Hamilton last Wednesday, and announced today by the Ministers before they left Hamilton for Wellington, is restoration as far as possible of property to the owner to the value prior to the disaster, it being generally understood that no profit should be made. Mr Nash stated that to ensure proper administration and an equitable decision regarding grants necessary to meet costs incurred in restoration or improvement, it would be necessary for all claims to be examined in relation to the value of the property, mortgages and other factors. A local committee was established to determine the terms and conditions where owners were required to find some part of the costs of restoration and to decided any other matters involved in placing the people back on their feet again.
