Basketball Tournament
NEW PLYMOUTH, Tue. (P.A.) Last year’s first grade champions (Canterbury) and runner-up (Auckland) both registered wins when the Dominion basketball tournament began in New Plymouth this morning. Canterbury had a clear advantage in combination over Manawatu and won 32—14, ’ while Auckland defeated Hawke’s Bay, 22—14. The tournament began on courts soaked by overnight rain, and handling was difficult when the balls became sodden, particularly in the first grade games.
Play was fast and open, with a particularly high standard of goal-shoot-ing.
Results to the midday adjournment were:—Wellington 20 v. Wanganui, 11; West Coast 14 v. Manawatu Minor 12," Tauranga 17 v. Rotorua 13; Te Kawau 19 v. Hawke’s Bay 18; Taranaki 13 v. Southland Minor 12; Auckland 22 v. Hawke’s Bay 14; Southland 17 v. Otago 8; South Canterbury 14 v. Horowhenua 3; Nelson 22 v. North Otago 6; South Auckland 14 v. Wairoa 10; Canterbury 32 v. Manawatu 14; Tauranga 18 v. Southland Minor 8; West Coast 12 v. Marlborough 7; Kaikoura 17 v. Otago Minor 2; Hutt Volley 11 v. Taranaki 9; Poverty Bay 15 v. Horowhenua 9; Wairoa 17 v.
