Maungatapere played several A grade teams in the first round, but in the second round it was YWCA’s turn. Thanks to good coaching. Hovers won the junior boys easily.

Roy Price had Ramblers’ centreforward, H. Primmer, well marked, and kept the other inside forwards bustled.

The play-off for the men’s A championship between Ramblers and Mangapai was a fast game .with Ramblers losing the advantage early in the piece. Mangapai won 4—l.

In the morning both teams had won their games.

Mangapai beat Maungatapere in a non-competition match and Ramblers beat Maungakaramea. 5 —4. ’Karamea kept their opponents at 4—4 for a considerable time before C. Bcehre touched a perfect centre by D. Hannam into the net. Cyril Bint was the mainstay of the country team, and as a forward and half combined, proved dangerous. Ot! (Sp.).—The Australian hockey team suffered defeat In the last match of its New Zealand tour when it lost to Auckland by 2 goals to 3 at Carlaw Park on Saturday. However, the tricky nature of the ground prevented the Australians from scoring at least three more goals. Women Have Win WANGANUI. Mon. (P.A.).—The Australian women’s hockey team defeated Rangitikei at Marton by 9 goals to 0. Chateau Reoperss RAPTIHI, Mon. (Sd.) Officially opening the Chateau Tongariro for the first time since 1942. the general manager of the Tourist and Publicity Department (Mr L. ,T. Schmitt) addressed a party of :;00 guests in Ihe lounge on Saturday. Mr Schmitt said that a target of £20.000,000 was set for tourist traffic and the Chateau was part of that plan. The Chateau was converted for use as a mental hospital in 1942 after the Porirua Mental Hospital had been damaged by an earthquake, but the water supply was fouled by volcanic ash in 1945 and the patients were evacuated to Ravensthorpe convalescent depot at Bombay.

A perfect shot by M. Carter for Mangapai from about a ,iard inside the circle was the turning point.

Carter had taken the ball down the line and was about to centre to the waiting forwards. He” saw too much opposition there, and with a hard straight hit, sent ttic ball into the corner of the net. Prior to this he had been unfortunate not to score when he had shot at goal and then rushed in for the rebound. It went into the net but off a boot. MANGAPAI SUPERIOR Hannam was always dangerous on Ramblers’ left wing, but he was well marked by the Price brothers in the backs.

A new water supply has been found and the wont of reconditioning the building had been carried out by a force of 80 men.
