The westerners displayed greater fire in the forwards and thrust in the backs, and deserved their 9 —B victory. In the first spell their pack played a grand game but the inside backs were sluggish and allowed the defence of the home team to stifle their movements.
A reshuffle of the line at the breather worked wonders and then the challengers generally called the tune.
Whangarei led at one stage s—nil.5 —nil. lost the advantage at 6—5. regained it at B—6 with a penalty goal and looked like holding on till the end. A determined attack in the last few minutes, however, broke the defence down .and Stanaway dived over in the corner for his second try. Taylor scored Northern Wairoa’s other try.
Thomson crossed for Whangarei. Hamilton converted and kicked a penalty goal.
