6 Unions Not To join Stoppage
BRISBANE, Wed. (11.30 a.m.)— Six important Queensland unions have decided not to take part in the 24-hour stoppage at Townsville, which began at midnight last night.
The stoppage is a protest against the gaoling of three Communists and two watersiders for non-payment of fines imposed for breaches of the antipicketing law. The unionists who ceased work at midnight are members of the Meat Industry Employees, Watersiders and Seamen’s Unions.
A mass meeting of railwaymen decided that the Railways’ Union should withdraw from the demonstrations. The Amalgamated Engineering Union, which was primarily responsible for the strike, in February, leading to the introduction of the antipicketing legislation, also withdrew.
