Hyruraui At Fremantle On Maiden Voyage
PERTH, Wed. (11 a.m.) — On her maiden voyage, the New Zealand Shipping Company’s motor-ship Hurunui has arrived at Fremantle. She was built at Tyne at a cost of £1.000,000 and replaces the ship of the same name which was torpedoed and sunk north-west of Scotland in October, 1940.
The chief steward, Henry Jorgensen, served for five years in the old Hurunui and recalled that two men lost their lives in the torpedoing, while he and other survivors spent half an hour in a lifeboat before rescue.
Later he was in two ships which were mined, and another which was torpedoed.
