Moscow Inspired Peace Offensive
LONDON, Fri. (11 a.m.)— Reuters has learned from Greek sources in London that Greece has told the United Rations Balkans Commission that she is prepared to negotiate a peace treaty with Albania, with which she is still formally at war. Diplomatic observers in London consider the chances that the Greek move could lead to a general Balkans pacification will depend on the solution of the Greek guerilla problem. In this connection the peace feeler put out by the guerilla radio on June 1 may be the latest phase in the wider Moscow-inspired peace offensive. An American plane carrying members of the United Nations Balkan Commission, including British Brigadier Donald, was fired on near Jannina yesterday. It is believed that Greek rebels were responsible. The plane landed safely without casualties.
WALL OF WATER.—Eighty-one persons were drowned by a wall of water which swept across the city of Amasya (Turkey). Many shops were washed away and one section of the city was left in complete ruin.
