MAIZE
GISBORNE. The Minister of Agriculture (Mr Cullen) travelled through the flood-rav-aged Poverty Bay flats yesterday, and met groups of sett ers who had suffered.
He was mpressed with the severe extent of the distrie losses, and promised 10 make recommendations regarding relief.; details of which he was' unable to discuss.
Mr Cullen was particularly concerned with the fate of (the maize crop. The Minister calculated that it would just be possible to get through*the year Without importing maize from abroad. The extent- to which the Gisborne- crop could be harvested would still have an important bearing upon tire, question of importation.— (P.A.) « *i -
