Whangarei Angles' Successful Day
Members of the Whangarei Deep Sea Anglers’ Club had a most successful outing last week-end when eight launches took them in another mass excursion to the favoured grounds outside the Whangarei harbour. Conditions were overcast, with a big ground swell which made things uncomfortable for those who were not hardened. The launches —Oleo. Ranoni, Moerargi, Valencia, Paloma, Aloha. Llandallah and Orari— left the Town Wharf at 7.30 a.m., returning to weigh in at G. 30 p.m. A big crowd awaited their homecoming and saw some excellent catches bought ashore. HEAVIEST CATCHES
The heaviest catch was made by Mr A. W. Cleary with 63jlb of edible fish, including a 1511 b hapuka. Second best catch was made by Mr A. Haywood with 621 b. Mr E.V. Ralls.’was well up with 4711 b . Red fishermen had a fine day’s sport, and three of them brought in good bags. Mr E. Dyer landed fish weighing 59 lb, Messrs J. Sutherland and J. Norris making catches of 561 b and 371 b respectively. Mr Norris made the most unusual catch of the day—a 191 b eel.
The outing was the most successful of its kind this season, all launches returning with good numbers of fish, mainly taken from Three-Mile Reef. Peach Cove, Terakihi Rock and the Hen Island.
