Rain Curtails Whangarei Re go Wo

Rain prevented the full programme of the Whangarei Cruising Club’s regatta being sailed during the weekend.

The third race in the Palmer Cup series was sailed on Saturday, and was won on handicap by D. Hunter’s Idle Along, Selina. R. Wilkinson’s Z class Cheetah was second and E. Ryan’s X class Mercury, sailed by A. Henderson, third. Selina’s handicap was 13 mins, Cheetah's 91. and Mercury 5 mins. The race was sailed in a moderate south easterly, giving a flat run to the 31 pile from the Onerahi jetty, a long and a short to the Portland channel red buoy, a lead to the Wellington flash, and a flat run back to fimsn off the jetty. WON OUTRIGHT The second time round the wind changed, giving a dead slog back from the 31 pile to the Red Buoy. The race was won straight out by E. R. K. Wilkinson’s X class Davina, with E. Ryan’s X class Mercury, sailed by Henderson, second, and the X class Aries sailed by G. Palmer third. The Palmer Cup was won by the 14ft T class Rena M, which won the first tv.’o races of the series. On Sunday another race was held in the Priscilla Cup series. This cup is for 18 to 22ft. centre-board yachts, and the race was won by the, 18ft V class Acquilla owned by B. O’Donoghue.
