New Novigation Aids

WELLINGTON. Sat. (Sp.l—As part of the Marine Department’s plan to improve the facilities for mariners operating along the New Zealand coast, three automatic navigational lights have been ordered and are expected to arrive from Great Britain later this year.

These will be established on Slope Point, between Nugget and Waipapapa Points, at Gibson Point, between Lyttelton and Kaikoura, and on Motuara Island, at the entrance to Queen Charlotte Sound.

Preliminary work for the provision of six new radio beacons has also been undertaken. The selected lighthouses for the new beacons are at East Cape. Godley Head, Portland Island, Taiaroa Head, Dog Island and Tiritiri.

An international convention to consider the safety of life at sea will open in London on April 23 and it is understood that New Zealand will be represented at the conference by Lieuten-ant-Commander E. Brown, chief surveyor of ships, and Mr V. G. Boivin, deputy chief surveyor of ships. It is probable that one of the subjects for discussion will be the provision of radar on ships and component parts on land.
