Challenge To Strike Ballot?
MANGAKINO, Sat. (Sp.). The validity of the secret ballot by which the workers on the Waikato hydroelectric power schemes decided to strike may be challenged by a section of the men.
Members of the opposition group in the Mangakino branch of the New Zealand Workers’ Union alleged yesterday that they had well-founded suspicions that the ballot was far from regular. They feel that the real issue had been clouded by the Communist element in the village. They desired, not to break the strike, but to prevent the union from being used to further the influence cf Communism in New Zealand.
NO STOPPAGE AT KAKAPIRO This group has been criticised by the union’s executive for canvassing fellow strikers in a “strike-breaking attempt.”
The only ipen still employed in the area are a few of the camp statf attending pumps which are keeping the inlet end of the Maraelai diversion tunnel free of water.
The union has made plans for games and concerts to keep the strikers entertained.
Public Works employees at the Karapiro hydro-electric station have decided not to take part in the dispute at Mangakino and to continue working.
