The Racing Wool Fleet THE eighteen seventies saw the passing of the famous China Tea Clippers. Steamships had come East and tea cargoes were no longer payable for sailing ships. Shipmasters were looking for new freight. And they had not far to look. Already a new fleet of fast sailing ships was racing down the roaring forties with cargoes of wool from Australia and New Zealand for the English Markets. These were the days that saw many famous ships, loaded to the hatches with wool from the new sheep lands of the South—days that saw the famous ‘Cutty Sark’ “Lead home the racing wool fleet, rip-roaring for the sales!” But soon the steamers steam-kettles, the old shell-backs called them —came South and the racing wool fleet vanished from the seas.
