Northland Lime Cartage Mooed
AUCKLAND. Fri. (Sp.).—The Goods Service Charges Tribunal yesterday decided to fix a cartage rate schedule for bulk lime ex hopper throughout the North Auckland cartage area. This will mean a reduction of 1/- a ton to the consumer and will cover the saving of time by carriers in not having to handle bags. The tribunal consisted of Mr Justice Archer and Messrs M. Simson and A. C. A. Sexton.
Tile application was lodged by the secretary of Federated Farmers on behalf of the Warkworth branch. Mr L. E. Ginn, secretary of the Rodney branch of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance, objected to any reduction in payment for lime cartage in bulk.
His grounds were the extra costs for carriers in maintenance and in the installation of hoists and because of the “small and uncertain quantities of lime" available for them to carry. His Honor said he was satisfied from figures placed before the tribunal that carriers tool: considerably less time carting lime in bulk from hoppers than in bags.
The objections raised could only be considered in relation to the extent of the reduction in charges to be made.
The schedule would come into effect at a convenient date soon, which the tribunal would decide.
