Many Assist To Quell Paronui Fire
Timely assistance from neighbours and members of the Whangarei Borough and County Council staff's yesterday prevented a fire in the Paranui Valley Road endangering properly and native bush. The fire started behind Mr N. C. Shepherd's house and spread rapidly through felled scrub that Mr Shepherd was waiting for a safe opportunity to burn. In no time the whole hillside was ablaze. Miss L. M. Smith and Mr G. Parker helped Mrs Shepherd to light the fire until other neighbours could arrive. *
The Whangarei Fire Brigade turned out with the engine and booster pump, but no water was available for the hose;.
The borough engineer- <Mr I. A. Cromie) and the county clerk (Mr G. H. Lloyd) were notified by a neighbour that the fire was spreading and endangering a patch of native bush. Mr Lloyd arrived with some of his staff' and commenced fighting the fire, together with the two truck-loads of men from Mr Cromie’s staff. The fire burnt for eight hours and was brought under control as darkness fell.
