Tangiteroria Closed Again

Owing to the seriousness, and close proximity of the infantile paralysis epidemic .the Tangiteroria School will remain closed for the remaining two days ol’ this week. This resolution was passed unanimously at a meeting of tire school committee held in- the school hall last night.

Copies of the resolution are being sent to the Minister of Health (Miss Howard), the Minister of Education (Mr McCombs) and the Education Board. The school went on “strike’ on March 1, but was open for children io attend if they wanted to. Only 20 out of the school roll of 88 attended. REOPENS MONDAY Work has been commenced on improving the sanitation at the school, but is held up by the scarcity of piping to drain the sump and latrines. The school will be reopened again on Monday, the school committee having power only to close the school for a limited period. It is believed, however, that most children will be kept at home next week. AUCKLAND SUSPECTS Two suspected cases of infantile paralysis, an infant from Manurcwa and a man from the metropolitan area, were admitted to the Auckland Hospital yesterday. The suspect which was in hospital on Tuesday was declared negative yesterday.

There were 40 positive and one suspected patients in the hospital today.

Two more suspected cases were reported in the South Auckland health district yesterday. Cne was a boy aged 14 from Taupiri and the other a girl aged five from Otorohanga. There are four suspect cases under observation at the Waikato Hospital. The first case of poliomyelitis reported in the East Cape district for nearly a month is a 13-year-old Maori girl, of Tokomaru Bay, who has been diagnosed positive. The three earlier patients have been discharged from hospital. WAIRARAPA CASE A suspected case of poliomyelitis has been reported from Martinborough. The patient has been admitted to the Masterton Hospital. The district medical officer of health (Dr J. P. Kennedy) immediately issued an order closing the Martinborough school until further notice. He is also taking steps to have all Sunday schools in Martinborough closed on Sunday and to reinstate the prohibition on the attendance of children under 16 at pictures in that town. This case of infantile paralysis was the fifth in the Wairarapa.
