Moral Teaching In Dominion Schools
CHRISTCHURCH. Tue. (P.A.).—The need for greater attention to be paid to moral and spiritual teaching in schools was emphasised by the president (Mr J. D. Gray, Christchurch) in his presidential address to the annual conference of the Dominion Federation of School Committees’ Association which was officially opened yesterday. Mr Gray contended that an education system whicii did not provide for this was not complete. Children should be brought, to an awareness to the principles on” which the democratic way of life was based. Mr Gray said that teaching in schools regarding temperance was perfunctory and in this respect he recommended that in a pamphlet on the scientific effects of alcohol being prepared by the Education Department, reference should be made to its social effects and that officers .should visit schools to see that teaching was being carried out.
