PIT Grant To Clothing Trade
WELLINGTON, Fri. (P.A.). —A further increase cf 6-i per cent in the allowance for labour content has been granted to most clothing trade manufacturers by the Price Tribunal. The increase operates simultaneously with the wage increases granted by the Court of Arbitration to become effective from yesterday for clothing trade workers under the industry’s three major awards. The assistant secretary of the New Zealand Council of Garment Manufacturers' Federations (Mr A. R. Dellow) said that garment manufacturers had been closely price-controlled for years and were in no position to absorb the .wage increases. Although the Price Tribunal had agreed that new wage rates could be taken into account in price applications, it had in many instances cancelled the effect of this by reducing manufacturers’ margins to below what they were before October 1. Negotiations were still in train with the tribunal.
