Auctioneers Defy Ban On Stock Sale
WELLINGTON. Fri. (P.A.f— In spite of notices announcing, “The holding of sales in these premises is hereby forbidden.” a sale of stock at Upper Hutt began in the rain yesterday. The .Upper Hutt town clerk, Mr :3. M. Wilmshurst, said yesterday morning after posting the notices that the intention of the Upper Hutt Borough Council to prosecute Dalgety and Co, Ltd., for holding the sale in unregistered yards—the council had forbidden the sale for health reasons—would be proceeded with. The maximum penalty under the Health Act was £SO.
The Upper Hutt Borough Council at an earlier meeting reaffirmed its decision not to allow the sale to proceed, but the Mayor, Mr E. W. Nicolaus, commented at the time that “unless someone is clubbed on the head the police will not interfere.”
Local farmers also met before the sale and sent a deputation to the council, but as neither side would give way a deadlock ensued.
