RUSSELL, Fri. (Sp.)—The Absolute Maori Cooperative Movement, begun about nine months ago in Whitiora Pa, Te Tii, Bay of Islands, has now been registered under the category of commercial growers. The virgin land selected by the movement was cleared and grubbed by hand, and the ploughing was then undertaken.
So far the following crops have been planted: Kumeras. 20 acres; potatoes, 7; maize, 21A; onions, 6; watermelons 1; a total of 55A acres. Four acres of potatoes and three acres of green onions will be ready by the end of the month. It is the intention of the movement to increase the growing area, with the possibility of tractor assistance later.
At the cooperative store 270 customers have now been registered. A recent inspection of the store by the health inspectors and district nurse resulted in a satisfactory report regarding hygiene and health.
