Your article on fire escapes, was timely, as this question is of such importance that the whole community should be conFIRE ESCAPES cerned. , The fire brigade are to be congratulated on their endeavours to have some precautionary measures taken. Owing to the difficulty of obtaining materials and labour, which would undoubtedly delay the erection of fire escapes more or less indefinitely, I would suggest that, as a temporary measure all buildings requiring escapes should have knotted ropes securely fastened at every window above the ground floor. This would enable many to escape who would under existing conditions, probably be lost. All buildings housing staff above a certain number should have fire drills carried out regularly.— (Moerewa).
