Buyers' Market At Yearling Sales

WELLINGTON. Thu. (Sp.)—Of 120 lots offered at the first day of thoroughbred yearlings at Trentham yesterday 77 were sold at an average of 42Ggns. against 90 lots averaging 710gns on the opening day last year. The sale was sluggish and buyers’ benches were practically deserted at the end.

Top price was 1600g'ns, which Mr W. R. Kemball. Melbourne, paid for a grey colt by Nizami from Lady Rosette, a close relative to the Wellington Cup winner Vintage, offered on account of Miss H. M. Westenra, Dunrandel. AUSTRALIAN PURCHASES Mr Kemball bought five other lots, paying in all 5600gns toward the aggregate of 12,240gn5, which Australian buyers gave for the 19 lots they purchased. Second highest price was 1400gns, which Mr H. Barber, of Sydney, paid for an attractive colt by Finis from Rulette, a member of the High Caste family, bred at the Newington Park Stud, Yaldhurst. Top price among the fillies was 1200gns, which Mr T. C. Lowry, Okawa,' gave for a well-grown half-sister of Ruthless to the champion two-year-old Tauloch, offered on account of the Santa Rosa Stud, Longburn.
