Man Drowned In Mangakahia River
A young married man was drowned while swimming in the Mangakahia River last evening.
He was: David James Walker, 21, farm labourer, of Parakao. Mr Walker was married with two children, and was a brother of Mr A. D. Walker, Moody's Avenue, Whangarei. and employed on the farm of Mr C McMillan, parakao. He was one of a party of seven men and boys who went to bathe in the Mangakahia River at about 7.30 p.m. He entered the water, but it is believed that he was injured in some way and, although a strong swimmer, he was seen to be in difficulties. INJURED IN WATER Mr J. M Hucker. one of two brothers who went to his assistance. was seized by Mr Walker, but he released himself, and Mr J. E. Hucker dived for Mr Walker, who had disappeared in fairly deep water, end brought him to the shore. Artificial respiration was unsuccessful. Dr L. P. Simmons, of Whangarei, was called but he found life extinct, and inquiries were made by Constable F. A. Davis, of Whangarei. Mr Walker was found to have suffered injuries, apparently caused by rocks, or a snag, as he was severely bruised about the held and chest.
