Racing To N.Z. For Transtasman Event

AUCKLAND, Thu. (Sp.)—Particularly fast time will have to be made by two of the Australian entrants for the transtasman yacht race. Peer Gy: it and Kurrewa 111. if they wish to reach New Zealand in time to load stores and complete formalities. Both these yachts had been refitting in Tasmania ifter the Sydney-Hobart race, but advice has been received that the Peer Gynt left for Auckland on January 6 and the Kurrewa 111 on January 7. The race will start from Auckland on January 24. The 40ft yawl Wayfarer arrived in Auckland from Russell yesterday afternoon after a good voyage across the Tasman. WITHDRAWALS Three Auckland yachts have withdrawn from the race. They are the Cimba, Lady Sterling and Waitangi. Six New Zealand and three Australian yachts are thus left, but the secretary of the Royal Akarana Yacht Club (Mr W. Ure) said yesterday that another New Zealand entrant is .likely, to withdraw. The remaining New Zealand yachts are Te Rapunga, Drifter, Rangi, Seaward. La Paloma and Te Hongi. Te Rapunga is the present holder of the Tasman Cup, which she won in 1938. She has been undergoing extensive refitting after being laid up at Napier during the war.
